Questions about flatster software
and products
How much does the flatster software cost?
The software itself is free.
Is there a set up fee to use the service?
No, there is no additional set-up fee. Only the monthly fee
for the service (basic or max) will be charged.
What can I do with the flatster software?
The flatster software client allows you to find your favorite
music and listen to it through the integrated flatster Player.
The recording function saves the track to your hard drive
as an MP3 file. This allows you to transfer the recorded music
to your MP3 player, or burn it on a CD and listen to it on
the road, at no extra charge for your personal use.
On what operating systems does this software
run?
The flatster software has been developed for Windows XP
/ Vista with Internet Explorer 7 (Info).
We cannot guarantee that it will properly function on systems
that work with Windows 2000 or Windows ME, for instance. Other
system requirements are: at least 256 MB of RAM, an installed
sound card with an analog channel (Wav, Stereomix, etc.),
and broadband Internet access. Currently, there are no additional
versions of flatster for Macintosh or Linux systems.
Will I need any additional tools?
Yes, actually. Without a Lame encoder, you can only listen
to the music that is found. Of course, the flatster software
conducts its searches without any additional tools.
Will the software work offline
as well?
Sorry, no. This is an online service.
Will the flatster software interfere
with other applications?
While listening to music through flatster, other MP3 players
should not be running. There are no known interferences with
other software or applications.
Which ports do I need to set in
my firewall so that flatster will run smoothly?
flatster needs ports 8080 and 20 activated in the firewall.
How can I use the software with maximum
efficiency?
The more titles you have in your wishlist, the greater the
probability that something will be found. We also recommend
leaving flatster running to maximize the search time.
Any special tips for using flatster and
the software?
Each user has their individual habits, however it is recommended
to keep flatster running overnight if you're searching for
older and rarer titles.
What is the 'Lame' encoder?
The Lame encoder is a free program which is programmed and
continuously enhanced by a volunteer group of developers.
According to experts, the Lame encoder provides the best recording
quality.
Questions about music and its
use
What kinds of music can flatster find?
In principle, any kind of music that may be played on the
radio. What exactly is being searched depends on the flatster
product.
Will flatster also find older titles
or unusual requests?
As long as the title you are looking for is played anywhere,
flatster will be able to find it. It may just take a little
longer with rare and unusual titles.
Will the music be interrupted by advertising
or presentations?
No. The music found through flatster is usually played without
any interruptions.
Will I always hear the entire
song?
Yes. In case of interruptions or breakdowns due to technical
reasons (e.g. loss of power to the user's system), the selected
music will not be saved as an MP3.
Does the software add watermarks, DRM
or other forms of copy protection to the recorded tracks?
No copy protection or watermarks are added to the file.
Can I use the service on other systems
as well?
Yes. All you need to do is install the flatster client. Currently,
there are no versions of flatster for Macintosh or Linux systems.
Am I the only one who is authorized to
use my account, or may others do so as well?
- The flatster account is a personal account. However,
a flatster account may be used by any person who lives in
the same household, but only on the system where the access
data have been provided. Therefore it is OK if, say, your
brother or one of your parents uses flatster as well. However,
it is not permitted to pass on your access data. Please keep
in mind that, if you pass on your access data, others will
also have access to your personal information, and will be
able to alter your settings and your lists.
Can two people use the same flatster
account simultaneously?
No, only one user can use the account at any given time. If
somebody else (or you, from a different system) logs into
your account, the current (older) session will be automatically
terminated. flatster cannot know which is the rightful user.
In such cases, you may have to block your account and have
flatster provide you with new access data. Also remember that,
if you share your account, other people will be able to access
information such as your playlists and music data. If they
make any changes, you will have to live with the consequences.
How long does it take to get the
music I want?
That depends on the user's individual perception. Often, you
also get music that you cannot obtain anywhere else. Compared
to other legal platforms, flatster offers the advantage that
virtually everything can be obtained, not only the contents
of a specific catalog. Sometimes it takes a while until you
receive your content, but you can be sure that it is legal
and in good quality. With new and popular titles, it usually
takes less than a minute. Compared to a download, this is
quite acceptable...
Why does the software only find a few
titles for some artists, even if they have released a lot
more?
Not every title that appears on a CD will be played by regular
and web radio stations. Titles that currently appear in the
charts are included in radio programs much more often, and
can therefore be found faster and easier by the software than
rare and unusual tracks.
What is the difference between 'flatster
genre' and 'flatster themed music'?
Every week, the flatster team presents new music from the
various genres.
The themed music list presents music that belongs to a certain
topic (e.g., 'Dance Party' or 'Road Trip'). If the topic is
'Road Trip', for instance, hard rock titles ('Highway to Hell')
may be featured alongside show tunes such as 'The Street Where
You Live'.
I would like to hear more than the three
suggested "Best of" tracks from the top albums.
Is that possible?
You are welcome to look for other titles by the featured 'Best
of' albums. Just enter the relevant information (such as artist
or titles) in the search window. flatster supports the "Fair
Music' concept and therefore asks you to also buy physical
products featuring this artist (such as a CD) if you like
the music and would like to hear more from this particular
album or artist. flatster encourages FAIR MUSIC. Please support
your favorite artists.

How often do the flatster charts get
updated?
The flatster Top 100 charts are updated every Tuesday; the
themed and genre lists are updated regularly, sometimes daily,
but not on fixed dates. Generally, you will be able to notice
significant changes at first glance every two weeks or so.

I have plenty of tracks in my wishlist,
but I can only see 100 of them. Why is that?
You 'only' see 100 tracks in the wishlist shown on the left
in the client; all the others appear in a large editing list
when you click the 'Edit Wishlist' button (below the wishlist).

How come the music is played, but not
recorded?
You need to install the Lame Encoder. Please uninstall the
flatster client (but first save any songs you may already
have recorded by moving them to another folder from your destination
folder) and then reinstall the flatster client from our website;
when prompted, also reinstall the MP3 encoder (lame.exe).
Please make sure to store the file lame.exe in the flatster
installation directory. If you are setting up more than one
user account, please install flatster as a user who has administration
rights to your system. You should also install the latest
sound card driver and readjust the sound card as needed.

Technical issues and troubleshooting
Can I change the directory where my music
is saved?
Yes! Under 'Settings' in the flatster client, you can specify
any directories you like.
What happens when I click on 'Full-text
Search'?
Because artists' names are often spelled in different ways
(e.g. Beatles/The Beatles), this function allows such "wrong
spellings" to be found as well. It also lets you search
for fragments of text if you do not happen to know the exact
title.
After a while, my flatster wishlist appears
to be empty. Why?
If your PC logs off from the Internet, or the line is disrupted,
flatster no longer receives the signal that a connection exists.
In this case, for safety reasons, the software will log off
automatically.
I cannot click on any buttons or links
within the client. What can I do?
In this case, you should make Internet Explorer your standard
browser. At any rate, you need to activate the Java settings
for Microsoft Internet Explorer (in Windows XP at: Tools /
Internet Options / Security / Custom Level), as well as the
Java protocol. Also, you need to allow cookies.
Sometimes, my music 'freezes'. What can
I do?
This is usually due to your Internet connection, or your system's
performance.
Why can I only use flatster 1.5 with
Internet Explorer Version 7 or higher? What about other browsers?
flatster 1.5 requires some of the basic functions of Internet
Explorer 7. However, this does not mean that you need to start
using Internet Explorer for your daily browsing. You can continue
to use Mozilla, Safari, etc. as before, just as long as IE
7.0 is installed on your system. IE 7.0 is necessary for certain
functions in particular, even if some users do not like to
work with it. Unfortunately, IE 6.0 does not have the same
functionality (or only to a limited extent); therefore we
were forced to base our software on IE 7.0. Without this basis,
flatster could not work as efficiently as it does in the latest
version, which would not be in the best interest of our users.

I can no longer use certain functions
following an automatic update. What happened?
Experience shows that, due to the many different browser versions
and tools that users may have, some users may experience problems
following a major update. In spite of extensive testing, it
is next to impossible to test all possible combinations of
user settings, so that problems may occur in individual cases.
In the past, individual and minor problems were always resolved
within a few days following an update.

I am unable to log into the flatster
client, but my User ID and password are correct and cookies
and Java are correct installed.
Did you updated your Internet Explorer to the Version 8 Beta
2? The Internet Explorer 8 Beta 2 is still in test mode with
several known bugs and the flatster client is currently not
running with this version. Please reinstall the Internet Explorer
7 or IE 8 Beta 1 and everything should work fine. Please wait
until the official IE 8 is released.

I would like to install the flatster client, but receive the error 740 - need higher access rights. what do I have to do?
This error message is generated direct from your operating system and not from flatster and tells you that you need higher access rights for this installation. flatster needs full read and write access rights. Please install the flatster client with full admin rights at your computer.
